Wall and Ceiling Painting Square Footage
Wall paint area and opening deductions
Gross wall SF = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height. A 20 × 15-ft room with 9-ft walls has 630 SF of gross walls. One 3 × 7-ft opening deducts 21 SF, leaving 609 SF of paintable walls.
Entered door/window openings affect wall area only. Use Deduct entered openings when deductions suit your estimating method. Turn it off to ignore the opening rows and use gross wall area; openings do not have to be deducted.
Ceiling paint area
Ceiling SF = Length × Width. The same 20 × 15-ft room has 300 SF of ceiling. The ceiling paint calculator keeps its material label, coats, SF-per-gallon coverage and allowance separate from wall paint, with a separate takeoff line.
From Paintable Area to Required Gallons
Surface SF is different from coat-SF
A surface is measured once, but every coat consumes paint. 609 SF × 2 coats = 1,218 coat-SF. This coat-adjusted coverage area is the basis for the gallons calculation; it does not mean the room has twice as much wall surface.
Coverage and allowance
Enter the expected coverage for your product and conditions in SF per gallon. The paint coverage calculator starts at 350 SF/gal, an editable estimating assumption—not a universal yield. Check product instructions, substrate and application conditions.
Required gal = surface SF × coats ÷ coverage × (1 + allowance% ÷ 100). Allowance is applied once after coats and coverage, before rounding containers. The default 5% is editable and is not a universally required allowance.
Required gallons versus purchased gallons
The calculated requirement may be fractional. The recommended order uses whole containers that meet or exceed it. For 609 SF, two coats, 350 SF/gal and 5% allowance: 1,218 ÷ 350 × 1.05 = 3.654 required gal → 4 × 1-gal cans.
In mixed-container mode, the calculator rounds the requirement up to whole purchased gallons, then divides that order into 5-gal pails and 1-gal cans. 10.962 required gal → 11 purchased gal → 2 × 5-gal pails + 1 × 1-gal can. This is a container quantity, not a lowest-cost comparison; pricing is outside the tool.
Calculate Primer Independently
Primer has its own material label, coats, coverage, allowance and surface scope. Explicit primer selections may extend beyond finish-paint scope.
- Same surfaces as finish paint: follows the enabled wall and/or ceiling finish surfaces.
- Walls only: calculates wall primer even when Wall Finish Paint is OFF.
- Ceiling only: calculates ceiling primer even when Ceiling Finish Paint is OFF.
- Walls + Ceiling: calculates both surfaces, regardless of which finish surfaces are enabled.
Opening deductions remain available for independent wall primer. With deductions enabled, the default 3 × 7-ft opening is subtracted; with deductions disabled, primer uses 630 SF of gross walls.
At one primer coat, 300 SF/gal and 5% allowance, the verified requirements are:

The results display rounds gallon values to three decimal places; whole-container ordering uses the calculated requirement.
Trim, Baseboard and Door Painting
Trim uses linear feet
Room perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width). Enter a trim deduction per room, coats, coverage in LF per gallon and allowance. This is an LF-based estimating method, not a detailed trim-profile surface-area calculation.
A 20 × 15-ft room has 70 LF of perimeter. At the enabled defaults—no deduction, two coats, 400 LF/gal and 5% allowance—the requirement is 0.3675 gal → 1 can.
Door painting is a separate scope
Door Painting is independent of wall-opening rows. Enter the number of paintable doors per room, width, height, one or two sides, coats, coverage and allowance. Adding a wall opening does not automatically add a painted door.
One 3 × 7-ft door painted on two sides has 42 face SF. Two coats create 84 coat-SF; at 350 SF/gal and 5% allowance, that is 0.252 required gal → 1 can.
Multiple Rooms, Specifications and Container Rounding
Identical rooms within one entry multiply before container rounding. Three default rooms produce 1,827 SF of walls, 3,654 coat-SF and 10.962 required gal, ordered as 11 gallons.
Separate room entries round independently. Three separately entered default rooms each order 4 gallons, totaling 12 gallons. Separate entries are useful for different paint specifications or colors, but may also represent other areas you want to track independently. The calculator does not pool their leftover paint.
Use room and material labels to identify colors or specifications. Labels organize the takeoff; they do not retrieve manufacturer product data.

What This V1 Takeoff Does Not Include
This painting calculator does not model exterior elevations/siding, vaulted or sloped ceilings, cabinets, railings or stairs. Spray-transfer efficiency, wet/dry film thickness, industrial coating and epoxy-floor systems, textured coating yields and manufacturer-specific product data are outside V1. It does not calculate labor/productivity, pricing, masking/protection or scaffolding/lifts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how much paint I need?
Measure paintable surface area, multiply by coats, divide by expected SF-per-gallon coverage and apply your allowance. Round the resulting gallons up to the chosen whole containers.
How many square feet does a gallon of paint cover?
Use the coverage specified for your product and expected conditions. The default 350 SF/gal is editable; the calculator does not assume all paints have the same yield.
How do multiple coats affect paint quantity?
Coats multiply the coverage basis. For example, 609 SF with two coats creates 1,218 coat-SF before coverage and allowance are applied.
Should I subtract doors and windows?
Choose the method appropriate to your takeoff. Enable opening deductions to subtract entered wall openings, or disable them to use gross wall area. Ceiling area is unaffected.
How much extra paint should I order?
Set an allowance for your project and application conditions. The default is 5%, but it is editable. Whole-container rounding can add purchased paint beyond that calculated allowance.
Can this calculator estimate ceilings?
Yes. Enable Ceiling to calculate a flat rectangular ceiling from length × width, with its own coats, coverage, allowance and material label.
Can it calculate primer separately?
Yes. Primer can follow finish-paint surfaces or explicitly include walls, ceiling or both—even when the corresponding finish paint is disabled.
How does the 5-gallon pail option work?
It rounds the required gallons upward to whole gallons, then allocates 5-gal pails and 1-gal cans. An 11-gallon order becomes two pails and one can; no price optimization is performed.
Can it estimate trim and doors?
Yes. Trim uses perimeter LF minus a per-room deduction and LF-per-gallon coverage. Door painting uses separately entered door dimensions, counts and painted sides.
Can I calculate several rooms at once?
Yes. Use identical-room counts for repeated geometry/specifications or add separate entries. Identical rooms multiply before rounding; separate entries round their containers independently.
