How to Use the Flooring Calculator

  1. Add and name a room or area.
  2. Choose Length × Width or Direct SF.
  3. Enter the number of identical rooms.
  4. Add optional floor deductions.
  5. Select the flooring material.
  6. Set the flooring waste percentage.
  7. Enter actual package coverage or roll width and direction.
  8. Enable wall base, underlayment or adhesive where applicable.
  9. Add separate entries for additional rooms or materials.
  10. Calculate and review the takeoff.

Number of Identical Rooms is a physical room count. The floor calculator generates square footage and purchasing quantities; this field is not a material quantity.

Length × Width or Direct Square Footage?

Use Length × Width for rectangular rooms. This flooring square footage calculator derives room area, perimeter-based wall base and simple full-width carpet/roll strips from the dimensions.

Use Direct SF when you have already measured floor area from drawings. Enter projected floor square footage per identical room. Direct SF intentionally does not generate perimeter-based wall base or exact roll layouts because the required dimensions are unknown.

Optional floor deductions

Add fixed areas that should not receive flooring, such as casework or equipment footprints where appropriate to your scope. Each deduction is length × width × number per identical room, multiplied by the room count. Enter only the deductions your takeoff requires; their combined area must remain below gross floor area.

Flooring Waste and Order Area

Order SF = net flooring SF × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100). The default 10% is editable, not a universal allowance. Room shape, cuts, layout, pattern and product requirements affect actual waste. Review those conditions before ordering.

LVP, Laminate and Hardwood Box Quantities

For LVP/LVT, laminate and hardwood/engineered wood, enter the actual Coverage per box (SF). The flooring box calculator divides order area by coverage and rounds upward to whole boxes. The same method serves as an LVP calculator, laminate flooring calculator or hardwood flooring calculator; product coverage remains your input.

Identical rooms within one entry are multiplied before package rounding. Separate room entries round independently. Three identical default rooms give 900 net SF → 990 order SF → 43 boxes at 23.5 SF/box. Three separately entered default rooms each require 15 boxes, or 45 across the three entries.

Tile Counts and Box Orders

Enter tile width and length in inches. Tile face area equals width × length ÷ 144, and estimated tile count is order SF divided by tile face area, rounded upward. User-entered box coverage is the purchasing basis; the tile count is a separate estimating quantity.

For a 10 × 12-ft room, 120 net SF plus 10% waste gives 132 SF. A 12 × 24-in tile covers 2 SF, giving 66 tiles. At 15.5 SF/box, order 9 boxes. This tile calculator mode does not estimate grout or thinset.

Carpet and Sheet/Roll Flooring

Roll material uses room dimensions, roll width and selected run direction. V1 rounds the cross-room dimension upward to full-width strips, multiplies by strip length and identical rooms, then applies flooring waste to the calculated roll LF. Roll-material SF equals purchasing LF × roll width.

These quantities can exceed waste-adjusted floor area because strips use full roll width. This carpet calculator provides a simplified estimating layout, not seam or pattern optimization. Direct SF reports area only and requires dimensions for a roll layout.

Wall Base, Underlayment and Adhesive

Wall base

Room perimeter = 2 × (length + width). Subtract the base perimeter deduction per identical room, multiply by room count and apply base waste. Divide required LF by stock-piece length and round upward. A 20 × 15-ft room has 70 LF perimeter; with no deduction and 5% waste, 73.5 LF requires 8 pieces at 10 ft each. Direct SF cannot determine perimeter, so wall base is unavailable.

Underlayment

Required underlayment SF = net floor SF × (1 + allowance percentage ÷ 100). Divide by actual coverage per roll and round upward. The default 300 SF plus 10% gives 330 SF / 4 rolls at 100 SF/roll. Coverage is editable and varies by product.

Adhesive

Enter actual product coverage per container and an allowance. Apply that allowance to net floor SF, divide by coverage and round upward to whole containers. The flooring material calculator does not assume a universal adhesive yield.

Combine Multiple Rooms and Flooring Materials

Group genuinely identical rooms in one entry; use separate entries when the material, dimensions or ordering assumptions differ.

Review each room's purchasing quantity before combining orders. Separate entries round independently, and unlike products should not be treated as interchangeable packages. Input changes clear previous results until you calculate again. The supported project limit is 100,000,000 net SF.

Worked Example: Office A

Use one 20 × 15-ft room, LVP/LVT, no deductions, 10% flooring waste and 23.5 SF/box. Include wall base with no perimeter deduction, 5% base waste and 10-ft stock, plus underlayment at 100 SF/roll with 10% allowance.

Adhesive is off in this default example. The calculator rounds packages upward using the entered coverage.

What This V1 Takeoff Does Not Include

V1 does not model irregular polygons or stairs, or calculate grout, thinset/mortar, floor leveling/preparation, moisture mitigation, transitions/reducers or stair nosing. Carpet seam and pattern-match optimization, diagonal tile-layout optimization, labor/productivity, pricing and manufacturer-specific datasets are outside its scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate flooring square footage?

Multiply rectangular room length by width in feet, then by identical-room count. Subtract the floor deductions included in your scope. Alternatively, enter measured square footage in Direct SF.

How much extra flooring should I order?

Choose waste for the actual product and layout. The default is 10%, but cuts, patterns and room conditions can require a different allowance.

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Divide waste-adjusted order SF by actual box coverage and round upward. Identical rooms multiply before rounding within one entry; separate entries round independently.

Can this calculator estimate tile?

Yes. Tile mode reports estimated tile count from tile dimensions and whole boxes from entered box coverage. Box coverage is the purchasing basis.

Can it calculate carpet from roll width?

Yes, with Length × Width dimensions. Choose roll width and run direction; the calculator uses full-width strips and adds flooring waste to raw roll LF. It does not optimize seams or patterns.

What is the difference between Direct SF and Length × Width?

Direct SF accepts an area you already measured. Length × Width also supports perimeter-based base and simple roll layouts. Direct SF does not invent those quantities.

Can I deduct cabinets or fixed equipment?

You may enter their footprints if your project scope excludes flooring beneath them. Deductions use dimensions and a number per identical room; the tool does not decide what must be deducted.

How does the wall-base calculator work?

It subtracts your per-room perimeter deduction, multiplies by identical rooms, adds base waste and rounds stock pieces upward. Wall base requires room dimensions.

Can it calculate underlayment?

Yes. Enable underlayment, enter coverage per roll and an allowance, and the calculator rounds rolls upward from net floor area plus that allowance.

Can I calculate several flooring materials in one project?

Yes. Add separate entries for different rooms or materials, each with its own waste, product coverage and accessory settings.
