How to Use the Drywall Calculator

  1. Enter the room length, width and wall height in feet.
  2. Enter the number of identical rooms.
  3. Select Walls, Ceiling, or both.
  4. Add doors, windows and other wall openings, with their dimensions and number per room.
  5. Select the drywall thickness and sheet size.
  6. Set the drywall waste percentage for that room.
  7. Enter optional full-height outside corners for wall-only corner bead.
  8. Review the editable tape, compound and screw assumptions.
  9. Add separate rooms or areas when dimensions or board specifications differ.
  10. Calculate and review the combined takeoff and room breakdown.

Number of Identical Rooms is a physical room count. The calculator generates square footage and material quantities. Use one entry for matching rooms; use separate entries for different conditions.

Wall and Ceiling Drywall Square Footage

Wall area and opening deductions

For a rectangular room, gross wall area is 2 × (length + width) × wall height. Each entered opening deducts width × height × number per room from walls only. Both walls and deductions multiply by the number of identical rooms.

Add multiple doors, windows or custom openings as required. V1 deducts every opening you enter; it does not automatically decide whether small openings should be ignored. Enter openings according to your takeoff scope.

Ceiling drywall and perimeter

Ceiling area is length × width × identical rooms. Ceiling Only works independently: unused wall height, wall openings and corner-bead inputs are ignored. Ceiling perimeter is also reported as 2 × (length + width) × identical rooms when ceilings are included.

Drywall Thickness and Sheet Coverage

Choose 1/4-inch, 3/8-inch, 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch board. Thickness identifies the selected board; it does not change sheet face coverage. Thickness alone does not establish fire-rating, moisture resistance or shaftwall performance.

Choose Custom Coverage to enter square feet per sheet directly. This drywall sheet calculator uses face area, not an optimized cutting plan. The same area method applies when you refer to the material as gypsum board or Sheetrock.

Sheet Waste and Order Quantities

Order coverage = net drywall SF × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100). Divide order coverage by the selected sheet coverage and round upward to whole sheets.

Each room entry includes its identical-room count before sheet rounding. Waste and sheet ordering are calculated separately for each entry because board sizes, thicknesses and waste settings can differ. The project sheet count is the sum of those individually rounded entry quantities.

The default 10% waste is editable, not universally required. Review cuts, room layout, openings, handling and reuse before choosing an allowance. The calculator does not optimize board layout.

Combine Multiple Rooms in One Drywall Takeoff

Build one takeoff for offices, bedrooms, corridors or other rectangular areas. Each entry keeps its own dimensions, physical room count, Walls/Ceiling scope, openings, board thickness, sheet size, sheet waste and corner-bead settings.

Name entries so you can check them against drawings. Keep different board specifications in separate entries and review the room table before ordering. Avoid duplicating shared scope. Changing an input clears the previous result until you calculate again. The supported project limit is 100,000,000 net SF.

Finishing Material Allowances

Joint tape and tape rolls

V1 estimates tape from net drywall area using a visible, editable allowance. The default is 35 LF per 100 SF, plus an editable allowance/waste percentage. This is not exact seam or joint mapping; adjust the factor to suit the board layout and project. Tape rolls equal required tape LF divided by the entered roll length, rounded upward.

Joint compound

Enter coverage per bucket and an allowance/waste percentage. The calculator applies that allowance to net drywall area and rounds the required buckets upward. Coverage is a user assumption, not a universal bucket yield. Product, finish level and project conditions affect actual consumption.

Drywall screws and boxes

Screws are based on user-entered screws per ordered sheet. The required screw count is rounded upward, then divided by user-entered screws per box and rounded upward again. These are estimating allowances, not a fastening schedule or a claim of code/manufacturer compliance.

Outside Corner Bead — Walls Only

Corner bead is wall-scope material in V1. Enter the number of full-height outside corners; the calculator does not automatically assume four outside corners for a rectangular room.

Corner bead LF = outside corners × wall height × identical rooms, plus the selected bead waste. Divide by the room's entered stock length and round upward for pieces. Walls OFF excludes corner bead even when stored corner values remain in the form.

Worked Example: Office A

Use one 20 × 15-ft room with 9-ft walls, Walls + Ceiling, one 3 × 7-ft door, 1/2-inch drywall, 4×8 sheets and 10% drywall waste.

With the default finishing assumptions, the live calculator displays approximately 350 LF of tape, 1 tape roll, 2 compound buckets, 1,024 screws and 2 screw boxes. These use 35 LF of tape per 100 SF plus 10%, 500-LF rolls, 500-SF compound coverage plus 10%, 32 screws per ordered sheet and 1,000 screws per box. No outside corners are entered by default.

Three identical offices

Change the identical-room count to 3 in that same entry: gross walls become 1,890 SF, openings 63 SF and ceilings 900 SF. The result is 2,727 net SF → 2,999.7 SF with waste → 94 sheets. Creating three separate entries instead rounds each entry independently, which can produce a different order count.

What This V1 Drywall Estimator Does Not Determine

This tool does not select Type X/fire-rated assemblies, moisture-resistant board, shaftliner or abuse-resistant board. It does not model multiple board types within one room, curved walls, sloped/vaulted ceilings, soffits or bulkheads.

Framing/furring, metal studs, insulation, ACT ceilings, finish-level labor, exact board-layout optimization and seam/joint mapping are outside V1. It does not determine structural or code compliance. Use project drawings, specifications and product requirements for those decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much drywall I need?

Calculate wall and ceiling area for the included scope, subtract entered wall openings, apply sheet waste and divide by sheet coverage. Round each room entry upward, then add the entries.

How many square feet does a 4×8 drywall sheet cover?

A 4×8 sheet covers 32 SF of face area before cuts and waste. Board thickness does not change that area.

How many drywall sheets do I need for a room?

It depends on dimensions, wall height, openings, ceiling scope and sheet size. The default 20 × 15-ft room with 9-ft walls, one door and a ceiling needs 32 4×8 sheets at 10% waste.

Do I subtract doors and windows from drywall?

V1 deducts every wall opening you enter. It does not decide whether small openings should be ignored, so enter deductions that match your takeoff scope.

How much drywall waste should I add?

The starting value is 10%, but you can edit it for each entry. Choose an allowance for the actual layout, cuts, handling and expected reuse.

Can this calculator include ceilings?

Yes. Select Ceiling with or without Walls. A 20 × 15-ft ceiling is 300 SF and requires 11 4×8 sheets at 10% waste.

Can I calculate several identical rooms?

Yes. Enter the physical count in Number of Identical Rooms. The matching rooms are combined within that entry before sheet rounding.

How is joint tape estimated?

The default is 35 LF per 100 net SF plus an editable allowance. Change the rate and roll length for your project; the calculator rounds rolls upward.

How is joint compound estimated?

Net drywall area, the entered allowance and coverage per bucket determine the bucket count. Actual yield varies by product and finish requirements.

Can it estimate drywall screws and corner bead?

Yes. Screws use ordered sheets and the entered screws-per-sheet factor. Corner bead uses entered full-height outside corners, wall height, room count and bead waste; it is excluded when Walls is OFF.
