The calculator does not structurally size lintels. Bond-beam lintel units are rounded per opening; reusable offcuts are not assumed.

How to Use the CMU Wall Takeoff Calculator

  1. Enter wall geometry. Use wall length and height in feet. Enter the number of identical walls; use a separate calculation for walls with different dimensions or assemblies.
  2. Select CMU width and waste. Match the specified nominal unit size and choose a project-appropriate allowance for cuts, breakage and handling.
  3. Add openings. Enter door, window and other opening dimensions. Each opening quantity is per identical wall. Remove rows you do not need.
  4. Choose mortar and grout options. Select generic mortar volume or preblended bags, then no grout, reinforced cells only or fully grouted. For reinforced cells, choose the specified spacing and additional grout waste.
  5. Enter reinforcement from the drawings. Select vertical bar size, spacing and lap allowance, plus joint-reinforcement spacing and waste. Choose the bond-beam layout, bars per beam and bar size.
  6. Review lintels and calculate. Enter bearing at each side and choose linear feet only or bond-beam units plus length. Review the material takeoff and limitations; recalculate after changes.

How CMU Quantity Is Calculated

Conventional nominal 8 × 16 CMU has a modular exposed face of 8/9 square foot per unit, including the nominal joint module. That gives approximately 1.125 CMU per square foot before waste.

  1. Gross wall area = length × height × identical-wall quantity.
  2. Opening deduction = the sum of opening width × height × opening quantity, multiplied by identical-wall quantity.
  3. Net masonry area = gross wall area − opening deductions.
  4. Theoretical CMU = net masonry area × 1.125.
  5. Order quantity = theoretical CMU × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100), rounded upward to a whole unit.

The theoretical quantity is an area-based estimate. Review specialty units, cuts and the actual wall layout before ordering.

Does CMU Width Change the Number of Blocks?

Nominal 4 × 8 × 16, 6 × 8 × 16, 8 × 8 × 16, 10 × 8 × 16 and 12 × 8 × 16 units share the same nominal exposed face. Width therefore does not change the block count for the same wall face area in this concrete block calculator. Width does affect grout quantities.

How Openings Are Deducted

Add a row for each opening size and type. For example, enter two matching doors as quantity 2. If you enter three identical walls, those two doors are deducted from each wall—six doors in total. Opening deductions must remain smaller than gross wall area.

Choosing CMU Waste

Allow for cutting, breakage, handling and project conditions. The appropriate percentage depends on the layout, number of openings, required cuts and ordering practices; no single percentage is mandatory. CMU waste increases the order quantity, not the net wall area.

Mortar and Grout Estimating

Mortar Estimating

V1 uses a generic allowance of 8.5 ft³ of mortar per 100 SF of net masonry. Actual consumption varies with unit configuration, joint dimensions, workmanship and field conditions.

The optional preblended mode uses approximately 16 installed hollow CMU per 40-lb bag, with bags rounded upward. It uses theoretical CMU before CMU waste. The bag and volume modes are separate estimating assumptions and are not necessarily physically equivalent. Check the selected product's published yield when ordering.

CMU Grout Estimating

  • No grout: no grout quantity is calculated.
  • Reinforced cells only: the allowance depends on CMU width and selected grouted-cell spacing.
  • Fully grouted: uses the full-grout allowance for the selected supported width.

V1 uses generic estimating coefficients, not manufacturer-specific CMU geometry. Actual grout volume varies with unit configuration and manufacturer. Apply additional grout waste separately from CMU waste. Generic grout estimating for conventional 4-inch CMU is intentionally unsupported.

Horizontal bond-beam grout is not included in the V1 grout quantity. Take off that scope separately from the project details.

Reinforcement, Bond Beams and Lintels

Vertical Rebar

Specify bar size, spacing and lap allowance per bar. The generic location count includes both wall ends; bar length includes wall height plus the entered lap allowance and is multiplied by the total locations. Additional jamb, corner and opening reinforcement must be taken from the drawings and specifications. This is a quantity tool, not reinforcement design.

Joint Reinforcement

Runs occur only at full selected vertical spacing intervals measured upward from the base. There is no extra base run and no automatic partial-interval top run. For example, a 10-ft-high wall at 16 inches on center has seven full intervals. The takeoff applies wall length, identical-wall quantity and the selected joint-reinforcement waste.

Bond Beams

Choose None, Top course only, Every X feet vertically + top course, or Custom course count. Counts are per wall. The interval option includes the top without duplicating it where an interval already meets the top.

Only full nominal 8-inch CMU courses can be counted as bond-beam courses. Partial-height courses are not eligible. Bond-beam specialty units form part of the overall wall-unit quantity: replace corresponding standard units rather than simply adding them again to the total CMU order.

Lintel Takeoff

Lintel length = opening width + bearing at the left side + bearing at the right side. The calculator applies the same entered bearing to both sides, then multiplies by opening and identical-wall quantities.

Choose linear feet only or bond-beam CMU plus length. Lintel units are rounded per opening; reusable offcuts are not assumed. These specialty units also require reconciliation with the total wall-unit count. The calculator does not structurally size lintels; use specified lintel details and bearing requirements.

Worked CMU Takeoff Example

Enter one wall, 100 ft long × 12 ft high, with one 3 × 7 ft door, 8-inch CMU and 5% CMU waste. The live calculator returns:

  • Gross wall: 1,200 SF.
  • Opening: 21 SF.
  • Net masonry: 1,179 SF.
  • Theoretical CMU: 1,326.375, or approximately 1,326.4; the result table displays 1,326 whole units.
  • Order quantity: 1,393 CMU after 5% waste and upward rounding.
  • Generic mortar: 100.2 ft³ as displayed.

The order calculation uses the unrounded theoretical quantity. Reinforcement, grout and lintel outputs depend on their separate selections; set them from the project drawings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many CMU blocks do I need per square foot?

For conventional nominal 8 × 16 face dimensions, use approximately 1.125 units per square foot of net masonry before waste.

How many 8 × 8 × 16 blocks are needed for 100 SF?

100 SF × 1.125 = 112.5 theoretical units. With no waste, round the order up to 113 units. With 5% waste, round 118.125 up to 119 units.

Does block width change the CMU count?

Not for the supported units with the same nominal 8 × 16 face. Width changes the wall assembly and grout allowance, but not the area-based block count.

Does the calculator deduct doors and windows?

Yes. Enter dimensions and quantity for each opening row. Quantities are per identical wall and are multiplied by the wall count.

How much waste should I add to a CMU takeoff?

Choose an allowance based on cuts, breakage, handling and project layout. Review it with the masonry contractor or supplier instead of treating one percentage as universal.

Can this calculator estimate grout and rebar?

Yes. It estimates supported generic grout quantities and selected reinforcement quantities. It excludes horizontal bond-beam grout and additional jamb, corner and opening reinforcement.

Does the calculator design CMU reinforcement or lintels?

No. Bar sizes, spacing, laps, bond beams, lintels and bearings must follow the project drawings and specifications. Results are quantity estimates.

Why can actual mortar or grout usage differ?

Unit geometry, product yield, joints, workmanship and field losses affect consumption. V1 uses generic allowances; verify manufacturer information and project conditions before ordering.
