How to use the board foot calculator

  1. Name the lumber item and enter a Material / Grade label.
  2. Choose a nominal size or enter Custom / Actual thickness and width in inches.
  3. Enter length in decimal feet and the physical number of pieces required.
  4. Set an allowance for that item, then add any other lumber specifications.
  5. Calculate and review Net, Planning and Order quantities, followed by the grouped specification summary.

Physical Quantity is the number of lumber pieces before allowance. You enter pieces; the lumber quantity calculator generates board feet, linear feet and whole-piece orders.

Board-foot calculation: formula and dimensions

One board foot is a volume equal to a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 1 foot long.

Board Feet per Piece = Thickness (in.) × Width (in.) × Length (ft) ÷ 12

A 2×8×12 contains 2 × 8 × 12 ÷ 12 = 16 BF per piece. Ten pieces contain 160 BF.

Nominal lumber presets

Standard presets use nominal dimensions as their board-foot measurement basis. A 2×4 therefore uses 2 × 4 inches in this calculator, not 1.5 × 3.5. Nominal dimensions are size designations; they are not a claim about the finished physical dimensions of dressed lumber.

Custom / Actual and rough lumber

Choose Custom / Actual to use your own thickness and width for rough lumber, specialty stock or custom dimensions. For example, 1.25 × 7.5 inches × 10.5 ft = 8.203125 BF/piece. A larger rough board measuring 2.25 × 18 inches × 8 ft = 27 BF. Check the displayed board-foot basis against your intended measurement method.

Board feet versus linear feet

Net LF = Length × Physical Quantity. Ten 12-ft pieces total 120 LF. Changing thickness or width changes BF, but does not change LF when length and piece count stay the same. Enter 10 ft 6 in as 10.5 ft.

Planning allowance versus a whole-piece lumber order

Allowance is applied once to each item's net quantities. Enter the percentage appropriate to your purchasing plan; it is an estimating input, not a universal waste requirement. In the formulas below, 10% is entered as 0.10.

  • Planning BF = Net BF × (1 + allowance)
  • Planning LF = Net LF × (1 + allowance)
  • Order Pieces = round upward [Net Pieces × (1 + allowance)]
  • Order BF = BF/Piece × Order Pieces
  • Order LF = Length × Order Pieces

Planning quantities describe the mathematical allowance. Physical Order quantities describe whole pieces of the same specified length, so they can exceed the planning BF/LF.

Three pieces at 10% allowance

For 3 pieces of 2×8×12, each piece contains 16 BF:

The mathematical piece allowance is 3.3, which rounds upward to four purchasable pieces. Use 64 Order BF / 48 Order LF for that whole-piece order.

Worked example: ten 2×8×12 pieces

Lumber A — #2 SPF — Nominal 2×8 — 12 ft — 10 EA — 10% allowance. The live calculator returns:

Here the allowance produces an exact whole-piece count, so Planning and Order BF/LF match.

Multiple lumber items and project totals

Use separate items for Wall Studs, Floor Joists, Beam Material or other specified pieces. Each retains its own dimensions, length, quantity and allowance. Material / Grade labels such as #2 SPF, PT SYP, DF-L #1, Cedar or White Oak organize the list; they do not change the formula or perform structural or specification analysis.

At zero allowance, 100 × 2×4×8, 24 × 2×10×16 and 6 × 2×12×20 total 130 pieces, 1,304 LF and approximately 1,413.333333 BF. Project totals sum the underlying item calculations.

Rounding happens per item

Allowance and whole-piece rounding occur before project aggregation. Two separate three-piece 2×8×12 items at 10% each round to four Order Pieces, giving 8 Order Pieces in total. The calculator does not pool the six net pieces and round them to seven.

Lumber summary by specification

Compatible items group by Material / Grade + Size / BF Basis + Length. The summary adds already-calculated Net, Planning and Order quantities, including the already-rounded Order Pieces. Different materials, sizes or lengths stay separate. Custom / Actual specifications retain their entered dimensions, so slightly different custom sizes are not merged.

Scope and limitations

This lumber estimator starts from already-specified physical pieces. If your takeoff requires 100 pieces of 2×4×8, enter 100 pieces at 8 ft. It does not determine cutting patterns, how many longer boards to buy, stock-length conversion, offcut reuse or stock nesting.

V1 does not perform structural member sizing, allowable-span checks, species/grade engineering, automatic framing takeoff from drawings or dimensions, timber weight, pricing, tax, labor/productivity or code compliance. Plywood, OSB and other sheet goods are outside this calculator because board feet are not their primary purchasing measure.

What is a board foot?

A board foot is 144 cubic inches of lumber volume: 1 inch thick × 12 inches wide × 1 foot long.

How do I calculate board feet?

Multiply thickness in inches by width in inches by length in feet, then divide by 12. Multiply BF per piece by the physical piece count for net board feet.

How many board feet are in a 2×4×8?

Using this calculator's nominal basis, 2 × 4 × 8 ÷ 12 = approximately 5.333333 BF per piece.

Do board-foot calculations use nominal or actual lumber dimensions?

Here, Nominal mode uses the selected nominal dimensions. Custom / Actual mode uses the thickness and width you enter. Choose the measurement basis required for your lumber list.

What is the difference between board feet and linear feet?

Board feet measure volume. Linear feet measure total length, regardless of thickness and width.

How does lumber allowance work?

The percentage increases each item's net BF/LF for planning. The calculator separately rounds the allowed piece count upward and derives the physical Order BF/LF from those whole pieces.

Why can Planning BF differ from Order BF?

Planning BF can represent a fractional piece. Order BF reflects whole pieces of the entered length. Three 2×8×12 pieces at 10% yield 52.8 Planning BF but four whole pieces, or 64 Order BF.

Can I calculate rough or custom-sized lumber?

Yes. Choose Custom / Actual and enter thickness and width in inches plus length in feet. For example, 2.25 × 18 inches × 8 ft contains 27 BF.

Can I calculate several lumber sizes together?

Yes. Add separate lumber items. Project totals combine them, and the procurement summary groups compatible material labels, size/basis and lengths after item-level rounding.

Does this calculator optimize lumber cuts?

No. Enter the physical pieces already specified in your takeoff. Cutting patterns, longer-stock purchasing and offcut reuse are outside V1.
