- Enter pavement area. Use Length × Width for rectangular areas measured in feet. Identical areas multiplies that footprint by a whole-number count. For an area already measured from plans, choose Direct Area and select square feet (SF) or square yards (SY).
- Build the asphalt section. Enter surface and binder thicknesses in inches. Add custom layers as needed, name each layer clearly, and give each its own density and overage. Use the specified compacted thickness, not an assumed loose placement depth.
- Check density and overage. Replace generic defaults with project or supplier information when available. Overage increases net tonnage by your entered percentage; it does not change the measured area.
- Include aggregate base if needed. Enter its thickness, compacted density and overage separately. Switch it off when it is outside your scope.
- Add milling or removal. Enter removal depth, estimated removed density and removal overage. These quantities remain separate from new materials.
- Estimate truckloads. Enter the planned payload in tons. Review separate whole-load counts for each material; turn the option off if trucking is not needed.
- Calculate and review. Check layer totals, total new material and the schematic. Recalculate after edits. The supported combined pavement area is no more than 100,000,000 SF.
How Asphalt Tonnage Is Calculated
This asphalt tonnage calculator converts area and thickness into volume, then uses density to estimate weight. With area in square feet and thickness in inches:
- Volume (ft³) = area (SF) × thickness (in.) ÷ 12.
- Weight (lb) = volume (ft³) × density (lb/ft³).
- Net US short tons = weight (lb) ÷ 2,000.
- Order tons = net tons × (1 + overage ÷ 100).
Each asphalt layer is calculated separately. Total asphalt order is the sum of those layer orders. Total New Material = asphalt order + aggregate base order. Displayed values are rounded, while totals and truckloads use the underlying quantities.
Asphalt Density and Layer Assumptions
Editable Asphalt Density
The generic default for asphalt and milling is 145 lb/ft³. It is an estimating starting point, not a universal material weight. Actual density depends on mix design, compaction and supplier or project requirements. Overwrite it when project-specific density is available.
Surface, Binder and Custom Layers
Surface course and binder course are separate rows so different pavement lifts can be measured independently. Custom layers can represent additional specified asphalt courses. Each row has its own thickness, density and overage; do not combine different sections under one thickness unless that reflects your measured scope. The asphalt paving calculator estimates quantities from the section you enter and does not select that section for you.
Aggregate Base
The generic editable base density is 135 lb/ft³. Actual compacted density varies with aggregate type and project conditions. Use the specified base thickness and a suitable density supplied for the project. The same area-to-volume-to-weight calculation supports a road base takeoff, with base overage applied separately.
Milling and Truckload Estimates
Milling / Removal
Enable milling to calculate removed material from pavement area, milling depth and estimated removed density. Removal overage applies only to that quantity. Milling/removal tonnage is not included in Total New Material. The result describes material to remove, not material to order.
Truckloads by Material
Divide each material's order or removal tons by your entered truck capacity and round up to a whole load. For example, 190.31 displayed tons at 20 tons per truck requires 10 loads. Each layer, base and enabled milling receives its own count. This is a quantity/logistics estimate, not haul-time scheduling; confirm usable payload and delivery requirements separately.
Square Feet vs Square Yards
1 square yard = 9 square feet. Divide SF by 9 to obtain SY, or multiply SY by 9 to obtain SF. Paving plans and takeoff sheets may use either unit. Direct Area accepts both, so you can enter your measured quantity without first converting it. There is no fixed tons-per-square-yard value: thickness and density are also required.
Worked Asphalt Takeoff Example
For 200 ft × 100 ft × 1 area = 20,000 SF, use a 1.5-inch surface course and 2.5-inch binder, both at 145 pcf with 5% overage. Include 6 inches of aggregate base at 135 pcf with 5% overage. The verified live results are:

Asphalt order total: 507.50 tons. Total new material: 1,216.25 tons. The calculator displays the area as 20,000 SF / 2,222.2222 SY. Surface volume is 2,500 ft³ before applying density. At 20 tons per truck, the separate orders require 10 surface loads, 16 binder loads and 36 base loads.
If you also enable 2 inches of milling at 145 pcf and 0% removal overage, the result is 241.67 tons removed, or 13 loads at 20 tons. Total new material stays at 1,216.25 tons.
What This Paving Calculator Does Not Determine
This is a quantity estimating aid, not pavement structural design. It does not select pavement thickness, mix design or compaction specifications; calculate plant yield, haul schedules, trucking cost or labor productivity; or choose paving equipment. Tack/prime coat, geotextile and striping quantities are outside this calculator. Use the drawings and specifications for the complete project scope. The pavement graphic is a schematic, not a construction section.

How many tons of asphalt do I need?
Measure pavement area and use the specified thickness and density for each asphalt layer. Calculate net tons, then add the chosen overage. The sum of layer order tons is your estimated asphalt order.
How do I calculate asphalt tonnage?
Multiply area in SF by thickness in inches, divide by 12, multiply by density in lb/ft³, then divide by 2,000 for US short tons. Apply overage afterward.
How many tons of asphalt are in one square yard?
It depends on thickness and density. At 1.5 inches and 145 pcf, one SY contains approximately 0.08156 net short tons before overage. A thicker layer requires proportionally more material.
What density should I use for asphalt?
Use project or supplier density when available. The editable 145-pcf default is a generic estimating assumption; it is not correct for every mix or compaction condition.
How do I calculate aggregate base tonnage?
Enable base, enter thickness and compacted density, then apply base overage. The default is 135 pcf, which should be replaced when project-specific material information is available.
Can this calculator estimate milling quantities?
Yes. Enable milling/removal and enter depth, estimated removed density and overage. Removal tons and optional loads are shown separately from new-material totals.
How many truckloads of asphalt do I need?
Divide each layer's order tons by the truck payload and round up. For example, 190.3125 tons divided by 20 gives 9.515625, requiring 10 loads. Separate materials receive separate load counts.
What is the difference between SF and SY?
SF is square feet; SY is square yards. One SY equals nine SF. Choose the unit matching your measured area in Direct Area mode.
